How this is put togetherA negative-space portrait: hair, beard, bow tie. I have used it for years, and it is my avatar most places you would find me. No vector original survived, so the version on this site was traced from a 400-pixel raster rather than redrawn, which means it is the same mark and not an interpretation of it. It fills with whatever colour it sits in.
thegodshatetexas is a nod to The Gods Hate Kansas, an Oakland punk band who played somewhere north of a hundred shows between 1997 and 1999, alongside Fugazi, Nomeansno and Alkaline Trio.
They took theirs from Joseph J. Millard's novel, first run in Startling Stories in 1941 and reprinted in 1964 as Monarch Books #414, forty cents, with a Jack Thurston cover that is frankly the reason I own a copy. Hollywood got to it in 1967 as They Came from Beyond Space, and moved Kansas to Cornwall.

Nothing is downloaded. Headings, navigation, dates and code are set in whatever monospace your system provides, which is SF Mono on a Mac and Consolas on Windows. Running prose switches to the system serif, New York or Georgia, because long-form text set in monospace is a chore to read. The tradeoff is that this page looks slightly different on your machine than it does on mine, which seems a fair price for a site that loads no fonts at all.
Next.js 16 and React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS v4. Writing is MDX on disk, rendered with next-mdx-remote, with syntax highlighting by Shiki. The favicon and the social card are generated at build time from the same mark and the same strings as the page, so they cannot drift out of sync with the site.
On a small Linux box I administer myself, behind nginx, with the Node process kept alive by PM2. No platform, no serverless, no analytics, and nothing tracking you.
